Co-operative Edinburgh
Organising Equality Housing as a housing co-op means that we can use the legal framework followed by all co-ops. We can also learn from other co-ops and be supported by them. Co-operatives UK and the Confederation of Co-operative Housing are both long established organisations supporting co-ops such as ours.
What about profits?
When co-op businesses generate income, that money is used for the co-op itself – there are no shareholders who expect dividends.
When needed, profits can be used to enhance the co-op itself, for instance to build up a contingency fund, to improve amenities and replace or repair items that the co-op owns. They can also be spent on education and supporting the wider co-operative movement.
In other words, all profits are used democratically by co-op members following the Co-op guidelines.
Sustainability
Often landlords themselves in the housing sector are there to maximise returns from their properties. Co-ops are owned by the members, not landlords. It’s often commented that having control over the co-op encourages commitment and enthusiasm from members.
No wonder that co-op businesses are more likely than others to survive the early years of existence, due to their purpose-driven nature.

for building a community where queer people can age with dignity and pride. - Democracy – Every member has an equal voice. Decisions about our homes, care and
community are made by us, not landlords or shareholders. - Equality & Equity – Everyone is treated fairly and respectfully, recognising the diversity
within our LGBTQIA+ communities. - Solidarity – We stand together, supporting one another and strengthening links with
other co-ops and queer groups. - Ethical values – Honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others shape all of our decisions.

- Voluntary & Open Membership – Open to LGBTQIA+ people who want a community
where they can live authentically as they age. - Democratic Control – One member, one vote. Your voice matters equally no matter who
you are or where you come from. - Member Economic Participation – Any surplus is reinvested into improving homes,
services and community—not paid to shareholders. - Autonomy & Independence – We remain community-led, even when partnering with
funders or agencies. - Education & Training – Members learn how to run the co-op with confidence, ensuring
long-term resilience. - Co-operation Among Co-ops – We work with other co-ops and housing organisations to
strengthen the wider movement and share good practice. - Concern for Community – We’re committed to the wellbeing of LGBTQIA+ elders and
the wider community around us.
